Much of what cultural changes are occurring within Brooklyn, also, are common withing many urban areas; DC has had its share of gentrification — that kicked off particularly during the Reagan era 80s and has since continued. It would be interesting if any groups do a sample focusing on Washington, DC. Gil Scott Heron has numerous songs referencing DC; one song of his catalog that could, possibly, be sample-ready — if permission by the his estate would grant use — is “Washington, DC”:
I think Gil-Scott Heron's work might be next on my list. I think he was very much a spokesman for black sentiment during his peak, and had something of a renaissance-man approach to engaging urban communities through song. I've listened to a bulk of his discography, but whenever I sit down to write I'm always a bit taken aback as to where to start. Your suggestion of "Washington D.C." might be a good jumping off point!
